The Green Bay Packers have announced via their official website that former Cincinnati Bengals and Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson has signed with the team. Benson is an eight-year NFL veteran who has spent the past four years in Cincinnati, and he has rushed for over 1000 yards in each of his last three seasons. He averaged 3.9 yards per carry for Cincinnati last year.
James Starks is currently week-to-week with turf toe and is expected to miss Thursday's preseason game against the Cleveland Browns. Brandon Saine is currently day-to-day and is a question mark for the game. This means that if Benson can get into practice soon and get a couple days worth of work with the team, the opportunity will be there for him to get carries on Thursday.
Alex Green is the team's only healthy running back and almost certainly the closest thing to a lock to make the team, so this signing puts some serious pressure on Starks and Saine. We'll provide some more detailed analysis tomorrow morning.
