As a Packers fan, you've probably been living under a rock if you haven't heard by now that the Philadelphia Eagles have decided to cut former Packer defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins. Jenkins played seven seasons in Green Bay and was a versatile player, spending time at both 4-3 end and tackle, as well as end in the 3-4 in 2009 and 10.
However, what you may not have heard is that the Eagles continued to purge their roster this afternoon by cutting fellow lineman Mike Patterson. He was a first-round pick of Philly's back in 2005 and played all but two games at defensive tackle for the Eagles until 2012 when he missed 11 games due to both brain surgery that he underwent after the 2011 season and pneumonia. Patterson averaged just over two sacks per year for the Eagles.
The question becomes whether either or both of these players could be valuable for the Packers. Personally, I think Jenkins is the better fit for Green Bay despite the age difference - Jenkins recently turned 32, while Patterson will be 30 in September. Part of the difference is Jenkins' familiarity with Green Bay and Dom Capers' 3-4 defense. He was probably the best pass-rushing linemen who has played on the Green Bay line under Capers, as evidenced by his 11.5 sacks in two seasons. He also would not be asked to be an every-down player at this point in his career, with several young Packers competing for playing time.
Another reason why Jenkins would be more interesting than Patterson is that the Packers already have a younger version of Patterson on the roster: Mike Daniels. The two are almost identical physically - Daniels is 6 feet tall and is listed 291 pounds, while Patterson is 5'11" and 292. Patterson also has the injury question which plagues him - unlike Jenkins, who started all 32 games in his two years with the Eagles, Patterson's 2012 was spent mainly off the field with some serious medical conditions.
You be the judge: which of these players would be a better fit for the Packers right now?
