Brandon Saine's release wasn't much of a surprise, but I'm not sure too many people saw D.J. Smith's release coming. Shortly after the news leaked out that Saine would be on the way out, the team put out a release announcing that Smith was joining him on his way out of Green Bay.
Smith has been a key backup for the Packers and was thrust into action this year when Desmond Bishop picked up a season-ending injury. Sadly, Smith also suffered a season-ending injury in Week 6 against the Houston Texans, tearing knee ligaments. He had 22 appearances and nine starts for the team, performing well in most of them, and a lot of fans have been hopeful that he can return to make an impact in 2013. Unfortunately, it looks like he won't have the chance.
I messaged Tex about this and his reply was "WHAT THE [EXPLETIVE]", which I think is an accurate summary of the reactions of most people to this news. We'll probably learn the details about Smith's injury and the reason he was released at a later date, but I suspect that he wasn't progressing as well as the team had hoped.
