I've been in Kansas City for just over a week now and everyone who've I talked to about Missouri football is still saying pretty much the same thing - "DGB...what an idiot." Of course, they're referring to the immensely talented (and recently dismissed) Dorial Green-Beckham - Missouri's 2012 star recruit and someone who was expected to be one of the top wide receivers in the nation this fall.
But while DGB's troubles may have been the biggest story of this off-season, there's another Mizzou receiver who undoubtedly has the best story - L'Damian Washington. I won't ruin too much of what makes this 10-minute video by Grantland so great, but it's clear that everything you could want from a player character-wise, Washington has. He's dealt with some incredibly tough breaks in life and still retains an infectious optimism, all while balancing some heavy responsibilities and, you know, playing football in the SEC. And although he has some weaknesses as a player (lean frame, questionable hands, etc.) his determination and hard work will likely make whatever mid-round investment a team makes in him well worth it.
We've talked quite a bit here about the Packers looking at adding a receiver in this year's draft and based on this video, I'd be more than happy with L'Damian Washington being that guy. He checks all the boxes you look for - tall, fast, good routes - and if his coaches getting choked up when talking about him is any indication, he's a hell of a person, too. It's getting misty in here, guys.
