The Green Bay Packers' injury report is out for Thursday's game against the Minnesota Vikings, and the list of names is longer than we have become used to. However, only one player is ruled out for this week, and the worst designation of any starter on either side of the ball is "Probable". Here's the report, which preceded Mike McCarthy's Wednesday press conference.
Packers' Injury Report
ILB Brad Jones (quad)
G T.J. Lang (non-injury-related)
OLB Clay Matthews (groin)
OLB Mike Neal (hip)
ILB Sam Barrington (hamstring)
DT Josh Boyd (knee)
WR Jarrett Boykin (groin)
McCarthy Press Conference
On Jarrett Boykin's injury, McCarthy said "I don't know if he's going to be ready for Miami. Obviously it's a long way away. It's more serious than I thought."
McCarthy was then asked about the Vikings' quarterback, and if he thinks that he is in the so-called "new mold" of quarterbacks like Cam Newton. McCarthy didn't really agree, saying "I think Teddy Bridgewater definitely has the ability to play from the pocket ... threw the ball with velocity (on Sunday) ... he can come out of the pocket and make plays."
McCarthy also thinks that quarterbacks are ready for the NFL game at far earlier points than they used to, crediting a number of different reasons: "I think you give credit to high school programs, and I think you have to give credit to college programs ... Madden football, what they're exposed to at a young age. So much out there."
Despite not playing against Adrian Peterson this week, the coach has a graet deal of respect for the Vikings' running game, saying "Look at their two runners, they're excellent. They jump off the video at you."
On the Packers receivers, "Davante (Adams has) been doing a good job ... I would think (Minnesota) would tilt the coverage to Jordy more than we've seen and Davante would have more opportunities. Jeff (Janis is) ready to play, doing all the little things. We'll see." Expect Adams to continue to get plenty of snaps in the Zebra package tomorrow, especially with Boykin out again this week.
McCarthy was then asked if there are strategies he uses to figure out what the other team's game plan is, and said "It's important to find out what they're thinking. To me, that's all part of your first 15 plays on offense and part of your early calls on defense."
Finally, with Ted Thompson being unreachable by the media, McCarthy was asked if he could shed any light on the Packers' strategy to keep only 52 men on the active roster, but did not explain the reasoning there. He just said "there's a lot of projections that go on there, I'm not in on all that frankly. I'm more focused on the 63 guys we have here or 62 ... that's a whole different set of information that they go through."
