This morning, we discussed the news that the Packers and B.J. Raji were coming close to a deal to keep the lineman in Green Bay for 2014. Thanks to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, we now have more details about the team's contract offer.
According to McGinn, the Packers offered Raji both a one-year deal and a two-year contract, and that the one-year deal is worth around $4 million in total. That deal seems extremely reasonable for Raji, and certainly will set him up for another shot at free agency in 2015.
As a first-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, Raji just completed the fifth and final year of his rookie contract. In 2013, Raji received just under $4.5 million in base salary and about $225,000 in workout bonuses. This deal will obviously be a slight pay cut, but it will provide plenty of motivation for him to elevate his play in 2014.
All in all, this impending deal is a sign that Raji and his agent did not sense a strong market for his services in free agency. For the Packers, it appears to be a clear message to Raji that the team is aware of his capabilities and that they expect him to play at a high level next season.
