Following the first open practice of the 2014 offseason for his team, Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy addressed the media, answering questions about a slew of topics. His discussions ranged from the organization of practices and roster construction to new Packers like Colt Lyerla and Julius Peppers, and everything in between. Here are some excerpts from McCarthy's comments today.

McCarthy was asked about a new drill he instituted this year, which was referred to as a "Team Takeaway" drill:

We have periods throughout practice with emphasis (on turnovers). Team takeaway is a team fundamental. Ever player needs to learn to handle the football.

On the new Collective Bargaining Agreement and not having contact in OTA practices:

We're all doing a better job of understanding what the tempo means this time of year. It's been an adjustment. We're going a better job this year than in the past.

McCarthy was asked if the team has more talent than in years past:

Training camp will answer that a little more. On paper I think there's competition throughout the team...it's a talented 89-man roster. As a coach, that's all you can ask for.

When asked for a medical update on Jermichael Finley, he would not provide any information but did say the following:

As far as Jermichael personally, he was in town but I didn't see him. I understand he's in great shape.

McCarthy discussed the NFLPA Rookie Premiere briefly, especially the fact that wide receiver Davante Adams and defensive tackle Khyri Thornton are missing practice for it:

Do I like that they're missing practice? No, I don't like it. And I don't understand it.

He also indicated that because it's part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, he wouldn't address that issue any further.

On JC Tretter's play at center:

Been impressed with Tretter. I like what I've seen...JC's doing a really good job...he's been here every day since the season ended.

On Colt Lyerla:

Like all our young guys, he's trying to figure it out. He hasn't played, feels like he has a little rust to knock off...I'm personally excited about having Colt here. Everybody is excited about helping the young man who's been through. what he's been through.

Discussing Julius Peppers:

Moves like a young man. He's an impressive person from all angles. Professional in his approach, takes care of himself...he looks awesome in 56, looks very natural in the outside linebacker position.
