To prepare for training camp, we will be breaking down every player on the Green Bay Packers' 90-man roster in more detail, looking at contract terms and 2013 statistics, before we make our prediction for which players will make the 53-man roster at the end of training camp.
We move on from the returning receivers to break down the Packers' additions at the position. Most expected the team to add a receiver in the draft after James Jones departed for Oakland, but few were prepared for three picks: Davante Adams, Jared Abbrederis, and Jeff Janis.
#17 Davante Adams
6-1, 212 lbs
How acquired: second-round pick, 2014
2014 Contract Terms (signed through 2017)
Base salary: $420,000
Signing bonus: $1,180,656
Total compensation: $1,600,656
Salary cap hit: $715,164
2013 Statistics
Fresno State Bulldogs
13 games played, 13 starts
Receiving: 131 receptions for 1719 yards (13.1 avg.), 24 touchdowns
Returning: two punts for 16 yards (8.0 avg.)
The numbers speak for themselves. By leading all of college football in catches and receiving touchdowns (he missed a "triple crown" by a mere 11 receiving yards), Davante Adams helped keep Fresno State in the conversation for a BSC bowl throughout the season. His athleticism is unquestioned; Adams produced a 4.51 40-yard dash, a 6.82 3-cone drill, and 39.5" vertical during his combine and pro day workouts. Only a historically deep receiver class kept Adams out of the first round, a fortunate twist of fate for the Packers.
#84 Jared Abbrederis
6-1, 195 lbs
How acquired: fifth-round pick, 2014
2014 Contract Terms (signed through 2017)
Base salary: $420,000
Signing bonus: $144,560
Total compensation: $564,560
Salary cap hit: $456,140
2013 Statistics
Wisconsin Badgers
13 games played, 13 starts
Receiving: 78 catches for 1081 yards, seven touchdowns
Rushing: six carries for 119 yards (19.8 avg.) and two touchdowns
Returning: 11 punts for 94 yards (8.5 avg.)
A home-state favorite, Jared Abbrederis became the first Wisconsin Badger drafted during Ted Thompson's tenure as general manager. The Packers don't plan on leaning heavily on Abbrederis as a receiver during 2014, but he's a smart bet to handle return duty.
#83 Jeff Janis
6-3, 219 lbs
How acquired: seventh-round pick, 2014
2014 Contract Terms (signed through 2017)
Base salary: $420,000
Signing bonus: $51,392
Total compensation: $471,392
Salary cap hit: $432,848
2013 Statistics
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals
11 games played, 11 starts
Receiving: 83 catches for 1572 yards, 14 touchdowns
Jeff Janis' workout numbers are just as impressive as his production; he ran a 4.37 40, a 6.64 3-cone, and jumped 37.5" in the vertical leap. Janis is no one-year wonder either, as he produced a 106-catch, 1635-receiving-yard, 17-touchdown campaign in 2012. What limited his draft stock is the level of competition he played in college. If Janis acclimates to the NFL quickly, he'll have a shot at the final roster.
