Packers Keep Both Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien

As part of their cut down to 53, the Packers have chosen to retain both Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien, leaving them with three total quarterbacks.

The merits of keeping two quarterbacks on the 53 versus retaining three has made for considerable debate among Packers fans the past few weeks, but it appears that Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy have made their decision, and both Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien will back up Aaron Rodgers this season.

After an up-and-down first year in Green Bay, Tolzien settled in this preseason for a combined 38/56, 477 passing yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. While playing through a torrential downpour in Tennessee and limited pass attempts against the Rams hurt Flynn's numbers, he still performed capably in the preseason finale, finishing that game with a 108.9 passer rating.

In the end, however, the Packers felt better about keeping two players that can serve as a primary backup than allowing one to leave. The move also prevents Green Bay from having to train a new quarterback on the practice squad.
