Packers promote Jared Abbrederis to active roster

Jared Abbrederis is on the Packers active roster for the first time in his career.

The Packers promoted wide receiver Jared Abbrederis to their active roster and released defensive lineman Bruce Gastonthe team announced Saturday.

Green Bay was short at receiver after ruling receiver Davante Adams (ankle) doubtful for Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers. Abbrederis will be the fifth active receiver for the Packers behind Randall Cobb, James Jones, Ty Montgomery and Jeff Janis.

After initially being among the team's roster cuts, the Packers brought back the former Wisconsin product and signed Abbrederis to their 10-man practice squad. Abbrederis missed three of the Packers' four preseason game due to a concussion he sustained on the first day of practice. He spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve after tearing his ACL in camp last year.

Releasing Gaston makes sense for the Packers, who are getting back defensive lineman Letroy Guion this week. Guion was suspended the first three games of the season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
