The Green Bay Packers announced two roster moves on Thursday afternoon, one which had been expected and the other coming as new information. The team announced the signing of wide receiver and 2015 third-round pick Ty Montgomery to his rookie deal, but that was reported on Wednesday.
The new item is that the team has signed undrafted rookie cornerback Travis Manning to a contract. Manning, who played his college ball at Northwest Missouri State, is listed at 5 feet 11 inches tall and 196 pounds.
Manning recorded ten interceptions over his career at the Division II school, including a career-high of four during his sophomore season in 2012. His efforts as a junior helped the Bearcats to the 2013 D-II NCAA championship.
As far as his measureable skills go, Manning reportedly ran his 40-yard dash in 4.51 seconds at his Pro Day. He also recorded an impressive broad jump of 11'3" and had a 37" vertical. (Numbers courtesy of NFL Draft Scout.) He participated in rookie minicamp with the Kansas City Chiefs on a tryout basis last week, but was not offered a contract. Perhaps this is another case of former Ted Thompson disciple John Dorsey (the Chiefs' GM) helping out an old friend.
Manning will wear number 31 with the Packers.
