Packers minicamp practice recap: Veterans get day off for final offseason practice

The longest-tenured Packers got a day of rest to close out minicamp.

Today's practice at Clark Hinkle Field marked the final day of Green Bay Packers minicamp, and thereby the final day of the team's 2015 offseason program. Following today's practice, the team will take approximately six weeks off before the start of training camp on July 29th.

Some players got an extra day of rest as well, as several of the longest-tenured veterans on the team (as well as a few players who have been working through injuries or rehab from surgery) were absent (and presumably excused). Here's the list of non-attendees, from the Green Bay Press-Gazette's Wes Hodkiewicz:

With Rodgers out, the Packers three young quarterbacks got plenty of repetitions in practice. However, each of Scott Tolzien, Brett Hundley, and Matt Blanchard made noticeable mistakes today, as every one of the quarterbacks was intercepted at least once. In fact, all three were picked off in the span of just a few minutes during a two-minute drill session.

Tolzien, however, bounced back well from his interception, throwing a touchdown soon afterwards. Hundley struggled again later on.

One thing to watch as training camp begins is the third-string quarterback battle. Though Hundley comes with the status of being a fifth-round draft pick, multiple beat writers commented about him being behind Blanchard, who had multiple good practices this week.

As for the defensive backs making the interceptions, there were at least five different players who picked off at least one pass, and undrafted rookie Ladarius Gunter was one of them. His name was mentioned multiple times, and based on another good practice and cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt's comments earlier this week, he looks to be the front-runner for the final cornerback spot on the roster.

Rookie John Crockett, in a battle with Rajion Neal and Alonzo Harris for the third-string running back position, was sidelined today after suffering a sprained ankle in Tuesday's practice. Neal took advantage of Crockett's absence, having an impressive day both on the ground and as a receiver out of the backfield. Neal also took some reps on kick returns as well.
