Packers OTAs: Julius Peppers returns, John Kuhn away at broadcasting camp

Meanwhile, Green Bay's two Stanford rookies remain away while completing their schoolwork.

The second open practice of the Green Bay Packers' organized team activities began Tuesday afternoon, and at least one notable player returned to action. Outside linebacker Julius Peppers, who missed earlier OTA sessions with an illness, participated for the first time in a practice open to the media.

Given Peppers' 13 years of experience, OTAs amount to little more than conditioning work for the future Hall of Famer. Still, given that Clay Matthews continues to work primarily at inside linebacker to better learn the position, having Peppers back gives the team a more accurate depiction of what the No. 1 defense looks like at this point of the year.

While Peppers returned to action, veteran fullback John Kuhn was absent. As APC noted over the weekend, Kuhn is attending the NFL's broadcasting boot camp, a popular workshop with players looking to get into television and radio after their playing careers. Kuhn's knowledge of the Packers offense exceeds nearly every player on the team, so an absence is hardly a concern. Rather, it gives rookie fullback Aaron Ripkowski an opportunity to take on extra reps and impress the coaching staff.

Green Bay continues to take it slow with Pro Bowl wide receiver Jordy Nelson. Nelson, who underwent a procedure on his hip earlier this offseason, should be ready for training camp later in the summer.

Fifth-round pick Brett Hundley returned to practice after taking part in the NFLPA's Rookie Premiere in Los Angeles. Hundley, a 21-year-old with limited exposure to pro-style offensive concepts, needs every rep to have a chance at unseating Scott Tolzien for the No. 2 job at quarterback.

Two of the Packers' rookies, Ty Montgomery and James Vaughters, remain away from OTAs while they complete their schoolwork at Stanford. While Montgomery has a long way to go before contributing consistently as a receiver, the team expects him to compete for return duty. Randall Cobb and Jared Abbrederis worked on punts in his absence.
