Remember when the Green Bay Packers announced that they would have a new throwback jersey for the 2015 season? That was all the way back at the end of March, when team president and CEO Mark Murphy told reporters at the NFL Meetings that it was coming, and coming soon.
Here we are four full months later, with no sign of that jersey. At least, there was no sign of it until last night, when one astute Packers fan was browsing the Packers' section on Nike.com and found this:
Do you recognize those? They look like a modern-styled version of the throwbacks that the Packers wore in 1994 (pictured at the top of this article). That seems to suggest that this is legitimate, and that we can expect those jerseys to be worn at least once this season.
These uniforms would also be used with the Packers' plain yellow helmets, which has been the case with the throwbacks that the Packers have worn over the past several years. They were originally intended to be worn with brown helmets, of course, but the league's policy on helmets dictated that teams use the same helmets for all games, regardless of the uniform selection.
It's worth noting that these jerseys are now nowhere to be found on Nike's website, nor on NFLshop.com. Making these jerseys available for pre-order seems likely to have been an error by someone at Nike. The other possibility is that the jerseys were automatically scheduled to be made available at 12 midnight eastern today, which begs the question, when will the Packers actually announce the new uniforms?
With the official announcement taking longer than expected and players reporting for training camp on Wednesday, the logical time to expect a reveal of the new alternates has been during today's Packers Shareholders' Meeting. That is even more likely now, especially if Nike had specifically scheduled the jerseys to go on sale today. Stay tuned for any news regarding the third jersey and any other major news items that may come out of today's meeting.
UPDATE (9:38 AM CT): This is the real deal. One Packers shareholder snapped this photo at the Packers Pro Shop today, a sure sign that the jerseys will be formally revealed during today's meeting:
