While the Green Bay Packers' new alternative uniforms garnered the most attention during Tuesday's annual shareholders meetings, team president reiterated what the organization has said for some time -- that the naming rights to Lambeau Field will "never" be sold.
With professional and major college sports becoming an ever larger commercial force, the prospect of cashing in on stadium naming rights has become widely accepted. Even the new Dallas Cowboys stadium now has "AT&T" affixed to its roof and sides. With sports leagues rarely forgoing available revenue streams, it would seem that any remaining traditional stadium name has little shelf life remaining.
But not so in Green Bay, according to Murphy, who told the team's shareholders that the organization would "never do that," promising that the crown jewel of NFL stadiums shall always remain "Lambeau Field."
"We have a number of benefits as an organization," Murphy said. "But Lambeau Field is right near the top. It would really be a shame if the name was ever changed."
While Murphy may indeed mean every word of his claim, he cannot guarantee that future team presidents will follow through with his intentions. Still, given Lambeau Field's stature as a premier NFL destination, it is difficult to envision getting support for a name change from the team's board of directors, at least anytime soon.
