The Packers concluded the first day of training camp and below are comments from head coach Mike McCarthy who spoke after practice.

On the first day:

"Definitely off to a fast start, the tempo was what I was looking for. There's definitely a lot to clean up, but getting back to playing football at the type of speed is very important and I thought our guys did a good job of that."

On Jared Abbrederis leaving practice early:

Abbrederis exited practice early after falling down on an interception. McCarthy believes his injury isn't related to the ACL tear he endured in last year's camp.

"Jared's being evaluated right now. I'm not sure what they're looking at.

"The way he fell, I don't think it was his knee."

On Andrew Quarless' absence:

"Andrew Quarless is dealing with an extremely difficult family situation right now. He will be gone as long as he has to be."

On Jordy Nelson's recovery after hip surgery:

"I thought the staff and Jordy took the right amount of time. i don't think there was a day when I was in here that Jordy wasn't working."

On Nate Palmer:

Nate Palmer received first-team reps at inside linebacker when Clay Matthews moved to the outside. McCarthy likes what he sees from Palmer on and off the field.

"I think Nate's making the transition really well. He's doing a good job in the classroom. He's a natural football player. His ability to play multiple positions really helps us and can really help them."

On when he anticipates outside linebacker Mike Neal returning to the field.

"I don't think long, but I know Mike feels he's ready to go. The training staff has not given me a timeline."
