NFL Draft Results 2016: Packers trade up to select OL Jason Spriggs

The Green Bay Packers flouted expectation during the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, trading up to select Indiana offensive lineman Jason Spriggs at pick No. 48. To secure the pick, the team sent their second-round pick (57th overall) a fourth-round pick (125th) and a seventh-round pick (248th) to the Indianapolis Colts.

Packers general manager Ted Thompson has rarely traded up previously during the first three rounds of the draft. One deal, which occurred back in 2009, netted the team outside linebacker Clay Matthews, one of the best edge rushers in the league. Thompson and his personnel department apparently felt Jason Spriggs and his upside justified a similar move. They also traded up in round two twice in 2012 to select Jerel Worthy and Casey Hayward.

Spriggs joins an offensive line unit that has three starters set to hit free agency next offseason as well as top backup JC Tretter. If the Packers lose one or more of those players, Spriggs appears likely to step into their spot.
