On Thursday, the Green Bay Packers waived quarterback Joe Callahan in an effort to open up a roster spot for one of a few possible reasons. The team needs to make room for Mike Pennel and/or Demetri Goodson, who are coming off suspension, and the running back situation may need addressing.
However, the Packers had hoped to pass Callahan through waivers and onto their practice squad. Instead the New Orleans Saints claimed Callahan, adding him to their 53-man roster. According to Tom Silverstein of Packersnews.com, the team - Mike McCarthy in particular - was distraught to learn that he slipped away.
This move leaves the Packers with just two quarterbacks in the organization now, with Brett Hundley as the only backup to Aaron Rodgers.
Callahan now will back up a second Hall of Fame-caliber quarterback, as he gets to work with Drew Brees in New Orleans. However, if the Saints decide to part ways with him at some point, expect the Packers to make a run at bringing him back.
