Nine days ago, the Green Bay Packers released quarterback Joe Callahan from the 53-man roster. With injuries aplenty and two players coming off suspension before the team’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, the Packers needed a roster spot and Callahan - the third quarterback on the roster - was deemed expendable.
However, instead of Callahan clearing waivers and the Packers having an opportunity to sign him to the team’s practice squad as expected, the New Orleans Saints made a surprise waiver claim, nabbing Callahan through the waiver system.
Now the Packers will potentially have a chance to get him back. The Saints waived Callahan today and if he clears waivers he will be a free agent and will have the opportunity to sign with any team he chooses. The Packers would of course be a logical choice, as Callahan spent the entire offseason and training camp in Green Bay and the coaching staff had reportedly planned to put him on the practice squad all along and was disappointed that he did not pass waivers initially.
Mike Garafolo has reported that the Saints also are hoping to get Callahan onto their practice squad, so the young quarterback will likely have multiple options to weigh should he clear waivers this time. Personally, I’d bet on Callahan returning to Green Bay if given the option, but stay tuned to find out.
