The Green Bay Packers are in a very unfamiliar place this week. One of the steadiest, most consistent players on the team is out due to injury this week, an incredibly rare occurrence over his career as a starter.
That player is right guard T.J. Lang, and head coach Mike McCarthy said in Friday morning’s press conference that Lang will be ruled out for the Packers’ week 11 game when the afternoon’s injury report is released. As Bill Huber of Packer Report notes, this will be just the third game that Lang has missed since taking over one of the starting guard jobs in 2011.
Lang will be joined on the inactive list by a starter on the other side of the football - second-year inside linebacker Jake Ryan. Both players were injured in last Sunday’s game against the Titans; Lang hurt his foot and Ryan was carted off with an ankle injury.
The other player to leave the game on Sunday was left tackle David Bakhtiari, but McCarthy was more optimistic about his availability for Sunday. McCarthy said that the fourth-year tackle “looks good” and that there were “no concerns” that he would be unable to play. Still, he may show up as Questionable on today’s injury report as a precaution.
Now, as for what to do about Lang and Ryan’s injuries, we hearken back to an article on this situation from earlier this week. Don Barclay will get the start in Lang’s place, and the Packers will likely have Kyle Murphy active as the seventh offensive lineman on Sunday. The situation is more fluid at linebacker, however; with just two healthy players inside (Blake Martinez and Joe Thomas), my bet is that the Packers clear a spot on the roster to call up Carl Bradford from the practice squad. The only other reasonable option would be to play Clay Matthews on the inside this week, which may be a tough task since he is just returning from an injury of his own.
Here is the full injury report for this week.
