It’s entirely possible that the biggest result of the week in college football has already happened. On Thursday night, #5 Louisville - who features the prohibitive Heisman Trophy favorite in quarterback Lamar Jackson - got drubbed at the hands of the Houston Cougars, once thought to be contenders for the College Football Playoff in their own right.
This result is a welcome sight for teams around the bubble, as this all but knocks Louisville out of contention for the Playoff. A couple of UWs in particular - Washington and Wisconsin - have to be thrilled by this result. With either the #2 or #3 team in the country sure to suffer a loss next week (when Ohio State hosts Michigan), that opens the door for either one to find a spot into the top four.
Wisconsin’s route to its first Playoff appearance is clear: win out against a bad Purdue team and a Minnesota squad that has played little real competition, then beat whoever ends up in Indianapolis from the Big Ten East. Badger fans should hope that Penn State wins out, because the Wisconsin defense should match up well with James Franklin’s squad.
Today, however, the Big XII is on the outside looking in at the Playoff, but could get some help with some more upsets. However, it has two of its top two contenders playing each other today - one-loss West Virginia, and 8-2 Oklahoma, who is unbeaten in the conference. Tune in for that game tonight, and enjoy the penultimate Saturday of the regular season!
