One of the under-the-radar notes from the Green Bay Packers’ practice participation reports in week 14 has been the statuses of the team’s two starting boundary cornerbacks, LaDarius Gunter and Damarious Randall (whom we have nicknamed “The Ariuses”). While the linebackers - both inside and outside - get top billing for the sheer volume of injuries at the position, the corners’ inability to practice fully should be a concern for Packers fans as well.
Gunter has not practiced yet this week due to an illness. Of course, the Packers will hope that he can return to the field on Saturday and play in Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks. One item to keep in mind, however, is that Gunter has played better this season when given an entire week of practice to prepare as the starter. When inserted into the lineup with little time to prepare, he has struggled.
While Gunter has sat out of practice on one side of the field, Randall has been limited once again through two days of practice due to his groin injury. He has played the last two games, however, and his limited reps may just be the team trying to conserve him for Sunday.
In any case, stay tuned on Saturday to see if either player has a change in status following practice. As of Friday afternoon, both players are listed as Questionable on the injury report, along with a host of other Packers. Among those joining the corners are starting offensive linemen T.J. Lang and JC Tretter, plus two players who contribute at inside linebacker - Blake Martinez and Clay Matthews. That’s a total of six starters with that designation.
The Packers did have a few players removed from the injury report; quarterback Aaron Rodgers is one of them, as the signal-caller was given no injury designation on Friday. He will play, as will Julius Peppers (who was rested on Wednesday), Letroy Guion, and Jake Ryan.
The Seahawks, meanwhile, have four players listed as out for the game. The most significant of these players line up in the offensive backfield: rookie tailback C.J. Prosise and veteran fullback Will Tukuafu.
