Cheese Curds, 8/9: HOF refunding tickets, Martinez aims for starting job

Will Green Bay start a pair of rookies in the middle of its defense this year?

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

Although there was no football game on Sunday night, the Green Bay Packers are not adjusting their practice schedule for this week - they are preparing for Friday's preseason home opener against the Cleveland Browns just like they would have had they played the Colts over the weekend. That means that the team will hold a pair of open practices, on Tuesday and Wednesday, before going through their private walkthrough on Thursday.

One player who is excited to finally get some live game reps is fourth-round draft pick Blake Martinez. With Sam Barrington still on the PUP list, it has been Martinez getting most of the snaps next to Jake Ryan on the first team defense, and so far he has been impressing in that role. Still, he has plenty to prove over the next month for the coaches to feel comfortable with him holding down that job.

Also from the training camp file, we find that the Packers released their first depth chart on Monday, which is an exercise that nobody on the team seems to enjoy. It is required by the league, of course, otherwise it would not have happened, but it's not time to panic due to anyone's positioning on that list. I repeat: DON'T PANIC. Just read the curds and get ready for an open practice this evening.

Blake Martinez strives to be 3-down LB | Packersnews.com
Martinez knows that since he is not allowed to tackle in practice, preseason reps will be critical to demonstrate his tackling ability and show that he can be a force in the run game as well as in coverate.

Jeff Janis buried on Packers depth chart | ProFootballTalk
OH NO! Let's all freak out about Janis being listed as a third-stringer! Could it be that a national writer doesn't understand that the Packers could keep six or more receivers? Or that the way they write their league-mandated depth chart (2 WR) does not reflect the bulk of their formations?

Pro Football Hall of Fame only refunding game tickets | ESPN.com
Good news: people buying tickets to the game will get their money back for the ticket price, and most secondary ticket sellers have already given refunds. Bad news: you won't get any reimbursement for travel or food costs.

It seems a little silly in hindsight to look back on this weekend's trip - at least the Packers got home before the craziness that shut down so many Delta flights on Monday.

Hall of Fame Game stadium turf will be replaced - NFL.com
Apparently the Hall already planned to replace the turf (which was installed just this year), but for next year they will "stitch" the logos into the turf rather than having them painted.

Let's try to make sense of Joey Bosa's holdout with the Chargers - SBNation.com
San Diego wants to include offset language in Bosa's contract AND defer his signing bonus money. Bosa is apparently okay with one of the two options, but not both. Frankly, the Chargers look ludicrous.
