On Friday, Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy spoke to the media in his final press conference before Sunday’s Divisional playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys. As expected, one of the first questions asked of McCarthy was the availability and status of wide receiver Jordy Nelson.

McCarthy announced that Nelson will be out for Sunday’s game, though he will travel with the team to Dallas. He specified that the team’s medical staff “will not medically clear (Nelson) to practice” on Saturday, which was a hurdle that was set out by McCarthy on Monday as a requirement for Nelson to play in the game.

Nelson broke at least two ribs in the first half of last Sunday’s Wild Card game against the New York Giants, when he was hit in the side by defensive back Leon Hall.

Although the Packers have historically fielded a much more competitive offense when Nelson is available, they did record nearly their entire offensive production (38 points and over 400 total yards) without him against the Giants.

McCarthy further noted that if the Packers do advance to the NFC Championship Game with a victory on Sunday, the team would re-evaluate him on Monday to determine whether he could play in that contest.
