Cheese Curds, 1/4: Packers need to play with a lead and capitalize on turnovers against Giants

New, comments

If Rodgers and company can score early, Green Bay's defense should get some balls thrown their way - and they need to catch them.

On Sunday, the Green Bay Packers did not exactly light the world on fire with their offense to start the game. They picked up just one first down on each of their first two drives before kicking into gear in the second quarter. Instead, it was scores on either side of halftime that got the team a lead.

The defense was stout early in the game instead, holding the Lions to a three-and-out to start the game and a punt on Detroit's second drive as well. They kept the Packers' offense in the game in the first half, then were able to watch for much of the second half as Aaron Rodgers and company kicked in.

This weekend, in the Wild Card round against the New York Giants, a hot start by the offense would be the best recipe for defensive success. With so many cornerbacks injured, Green Bay must be able to make the Giants offense one-dimensional. That will allow the pass rush to tee off on Eli Manning, which in turn will inevitably result in more opportunities for the secondary to pick off a few of his passes.

The formula for a Packers win is discussed at length in today's Cheese Curds, including the players who will need to be at their best if Green Bay is to advance to the Divisional round.
