Across the country, today’s college football schedule is a bit of a dud. Most of the top teams across the college football landscape are playing low-ranked conference opponents, and the top two teams in the playoff rankings — Alabama and Clemson — are stooping to play FCS teams on the penultimate weekend of the regular season.
That’s why the one game between ranked teams on the schedule will draw so many eyeballs in the early going, and why College Gameday is on Bascom Hill in Madison this morning. It’s Wisconsin and Michigan squaring off at Camp Randall Stadium as the Badgers look to move to 11-0 and bolster their case for a spot in the playoff.
The Badgers got their first win over a ranked team a week ago, beating 20th-ranked Iowa 38-14 despite committing four turnovers. This week, Michigan enters ranked 24th looking for their first win at Camp Randall since 2001. In the last seven games between these two programs, extending back to 2005, the home team is 6-1, with the lone road win coming in a 48-28 Badger victory at the Big House.
This seven-game run started on a rainy night twelve years ago, when an unranked Wisconsin hosted 14th-place Michigan for an evening kickoff. John Stocco’s quarterback draw into the South end zone with 24 seconds left put the Badgers on top for a 23-20 victory.
The Badgers also probably have revenge on their minds for last year’s game. Wisconsin’s defense held Michigan to just 14 points, but the offense barely moved the football and Alex Hornibrook threw three interceptions on the way to a 14-7 loss in Ann Arbor.
Here’s your schedule for today’s games.
