The Green Bay Packers are unlikely to sign any big-name free agents in 2017. General Manager Ted Thompson’s standard operating procedure is to not get involved in bidding wars, instead preferring to re-sign Packers players about to hit free agency or add the occasional street free agent who has been released by his former team.
But that doesn’t stop Packers fans from dreaming about some of the players on the open market anyway, especially in a year like 2017 when Thompson has an estimated $43 million in salary cap space to work with.
For today’s lunch break, we propose the following scenario and question to you, the readers of APC:
Assume the Packers can sign one (and only one) unrestricted free agent who spent 2016 with another team , and they could do so with no financial or salary cap impact. That means that the Packers could still bring back some key players from 2016 like Nick Perry or Micah Hyde.
Under those conditions, the question comes down to this: which one unrestricted free agent would you want Ted Thompson to sign?
We expect that most of the votes will go towards players on the defensive side of the ball. A few names stick out here: cornerbacks Trumaine Johnson and Stephon Gilmore, or edge rushers like Melvin Ingram and Chandler Jones. Would you go off the board and add a game-breaking running back like Le’Veon Bell? (Bell was recently given 26:1 odds to land in Green Bay.)
However, there can be only one. Who’s it going to be?
