Every year in late July, people come out of the woodwork to share their opinions on one of the Green Bay Packers’ most cherished traditions and unique qualities. The Packers’ shareholders meeting is a chance each summer for the thousands of people across the world who own a piece of the team to get together in their shared commitment to the organization and be treated to presentations by the primary operators of the franchise.
It’s also a chance for national columnists and fans of other teams to bash Packers fans as stupid for paying for a glorified piece of wall art.
Well, those people can shove it.
For us shareholders, it’s not a potential investment return that made us buy in; it doesn’t bother us that we can’t buy more shares and round up a voting majority in one place. It’s the feeling of connection that we have to our football team that other fans can’t have that drove us to make the investment. It’s knowing that by voluntarily buying in, we helped to ensure the financial stability and viability of the team in the long run.
And that, my friends, is priceless.
