Packers vs. Washington stock up report: Brett Hundley and Taysom Hill shine again

Two of the Packers' backup quarterbacks and one of their reserve corners made significant strides towards securing their spots on the final roster.

On Saturday, the Green Bay Packers moved to 2-0 on the preseason courtesy of a 21-17 win over Washington. The final score matters little, however, as the coaches care far more about the game film they can devour over the next few days. With all but 12 members of the 90-man roster participating in the game, the team has plenty of good and poor performances to consider.

Let's start out with the positive -- the stock up report.

Josh Hawkins

A forgotten man despite spending all of his rookie season on the Packers' 53-man roster, Josh Hawkins entered 2017 without job security. After an up-and-down training camp, Hawkins earned some time with the No. 1 defense during the lead-up to the second week of the preseason. Hawkins rewarded his coaches with a fine performance in the game. The cornerback made a tremendous open-field tackle to force a punt on Green Bay's first defensive series and saved a touchdown with a pass breakup after a muffed punt brought Washington's offense back onto the field. Hawkins also jarred the ball out of Vernon Davis' grasp to force fourth down during the second quarter, a play originally ruled a fumble.

Brett Hundley and Taysom Hill

The stats didn't adequately reflect how well Brett Hundley played during the first week of the preseason. The numbers finally followed on Saturday with Hundley showcasing his arm talent. The backup signal-caller completed nine of his 10 attempts for 107 yards and a touchdown, good for a 144.6 passer rating. Much of that yardage came on a perfectly placed deep strike to Jeff Janis down the sideline. Hundley remains blocked on the depth chart in Green Bay, but performances such as Saturday's should garner him consideration for a starting job somewhere else in the not-too-distant future.

Like Hundley, Taysom Hill built on a solid preseason debut to showcase more of his skill set. On his first series, Hill completed three of his five passes while under heavy duress and flashed his stiff arm on a 23-yard gallop to the end zone. With fellow reserve Joe Callahan continuing to struggle, Hill has made a compelling case for the Packers' No. 3 job at quarterback.

Jeff Janis

The people's champion won't fade away. After a shaky game a week earlier, Jeff Janis rebounded with several big receptions on offense (including a beautiful 38-yard sideline catch) as well as consistent play on special teams. The fourth-year wideout finished the day with three catches on four targets for 63 yards, the most of any Packers pass-catcher. At this point, the Packers don't expect Janis to develop into a consistent receiver, but a few plays here and there along with solid play on special teams should net him a roster spot.
