The Green Bay Packers were active on the first day of the 2018 NFL Draft, trading back from the 14th overall selection to number 27 before moving back up to select Louisville cornerback Jaire Alexander with the 18th pick.
Those trades cost the Packers four spots in round one and their third-round selection (#76 overall). However, the Packers did get an upgrade from a sixth-round pick (#186) to a fifth-rounder (#147) plus another seventh-round selection (#248), but the big piece that Green Bay picked up was another first-round pick in next year’s draft. That selection came from the New Orleans Saints as part of the package that allowed the Packers to move down, before they traded that 76th pick to come up for Alexander.
What yesterday’s results mean is that the Packers are scheduled to make just one selection on Friday, the second night of the draft. That pick will come up pretty early, as the Packers hold the 13th selection of round two (#45 overall).
However, with six picks between the start of round four and the end of round five sitting in his back pocket, general manager Brian Gutekunst has plenty of ammo to move up for another day-two selection this evening. Here’s a look at a few of the ways he might be able to do just that.
Thus we will be on pins and needles all evening as we await news of Green Bay’s plans. Now, here’s your primer and live thread for today’s draft.
