Vic Fangio will remain in Chicago as Bears' defensive coordinator, per report

The Green Bay Packers made a valiant effort to pry Vic Fangio away from the Chicago Bears this offseason before hiring Mike Pettine for the defensive coordinator job. Now it appears that Fangio is staying in place in the Windy City in the same job.

According to a report from Adam Schefter, Fangio has elected to stay on the Bears' staff as defensive coordinator. The Bears fired head coach John Fox and replaced him this week with former Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, who was apparently able to convince Fangio to stick around.

The Packers were unable to contact Fangio without the Bears' permission until this Tuesday morning due to league rules, but they moved quickly on Pettine.

Fangio just completed his third season as the Bears' defensive coordinator, having transitioned the team from a 4-3 to a 3-4 scheme upon his arrival. Chicago's defense - one of the worst in the NFL in the few years before he arrived - has quickly improved the unit’s performance. The Bears have ranked in the top 15 in yards allowed each of the last three years after finishing in the bottom three each of the previous two years. Chicago’s improvement in DVOA is more of a steady rise, going from 25th, 28th, and 31st in the three years before Fangio’s arrival to 23rd in 2016 and and 14th overall in 2017.
