After biding their time, the Green Bay Packers should get their chance to interview one of the top defensive coaches on the market. According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Mike McCarthy expects to talk with Vic Fangio about the team’s vacancy at defensive coordinator.
Fangio has spent the last three years as the defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears under head coach John Fox. After the Bears fired Fox following a disappointing 2017 season, Fangio became a hot commodity among teams seeking an upgrade on defense. That list included the Packers, who fired Dom Capers after nine seasons.
The Packers formally requested the chance to interview Fangio last week. However, the Bears declined the request, forcing Fangio to wait until Tuesday to talk with Green Bay and other interested teams.
Before Chicago, Fangio coordinated some of the best defenses in the NFL as part of Jim Harbaugh’s staff with the San Francisco 49ers. Fangio also served as Dom Capers’ defensive coordinator with the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans.
