A battle for the lead in the AFC West takes place this evening on Monday Night Football, as the unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs travel West to face the Denver Broncos. Denver’s long-heralded defense — with a secondary previously nicknamed the “No-Fly Zone” — has slipped back this year, ranking just 16th in overall DVOA and 19th in pass DVOA after three weeks.
However, Denver has jumped out to a 2-1 record early, with wins over the Seattle Seahawks and Oakland Raiders. Both games came at home, but the winning margin of those contests were three points and one, respectively. Still, they get the Chiefs in Denver tonight and must be hoping that the thin Colorado air will give them some advantage over Patrick Mahomes, who has set the league afire to start the season.
Mahomes has completed two-thirds of his passes so far this season for just under 300 yards per game, but the most impressive number is his 13:0 touchdown-to-interception ratio. His passer rating is an absurd 137.4, and he is throwing a touchdown one out of every seven pass attempts.
Can Denver’s defense get to Mahomes with its pass rush or slow him down with a secondary that isn’t living up to its nickname? Tune in to find out.
Tune in for tonight’s game and join us to discuss in the comments.
