With more than 24 hours now having passed since the Green Bay Packers’ heartbreaking loss to the Los Angeles’ Rams and the massive faux pas that ended it, there’s one question at the front of every Packers’ fans minds.
Should the Packers cut Ty Montgomery?
Now that head coach Mike McCarthy and Montgomery have both have weighed in on the bizarre end to the game, we can look at all sides to this story and come to a conclusion.
Yes, there is a case to be made for cutting the reciever-turned-running back and it doesn’t necessarily have to do with his game losing fumble at the end.
Even if you take Montgomery’s word that he didn’t know where he was when he caught the kickoff, there are still the anonymous quotes from players regarding Montgomery’s meltdown on the sideline when he was removed from the game on the previous offensive series.
Then there’s also his missed block that allowed Aaron Donald a free rush at Aaron Rodgers. You can’t do that.
Montgomery is expendable. Sure, the offense would miss his versatility in play design but with two rookie wide receivers beginning to emerge one would think the offense would survive.
Cutting Montgomery would expose him to waivers and you just know the New England Patriots would love to have him going into Sunday night’s game against Green Bay.
There is still the trade option, but with today being the deadline general manager Brian Gutekunst would have to move fast.
Regardless of outcome, the bell is beginning to toll on Montgomery’s time in Green Bay. It’s just a matter of when that final ring will come.
