The Green Bay Packers are likely to be without one of their starters on offense, but the good news is that they have been humming along just fine without him in recent weeks.
Wide receiver Geronimo Allison came down with a new injury in practice this week, adding a groin issue onto the hamstring problem that has plagued him in recent weeks. Of course, the hamstring popped up while he was rehabbing from a concussion, and this combination of issues has allowed him to play in just one game over the past four weeks (though the Packers did have a bye in that span). On Friday, Allison was ruled as doubtful for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots, thanks in large part to that groin injury.
However, the two games that Allison missed saw the team rack up 521 yards in each contest, by far the high-water marks on the season. The team’s rookie receivers were a big part of that production, led by fifth-rounder Marquez Valdes-Scantling; and even when Allison did return last week, MVS took more snaps on offense (31 to 30) and saw five targets to the veteran’s one.
Therefore, keep MVS in your sights for this week, and Allison’s likely absence should also mean more snaps for Equanimeous St. Brown as well.
Besides Allison, the Packers have three other players on the report, all listed as questionable for Sunday. Fellow wideout Randall Cobb is on that list, thanks to a hamstring problem of his own, joined by starting outside linebacker Nick Perry and safety Jermaine Whitehead. All three players practiced on a limited basis on Thursday.
The Patriots have a much lengthier report, however. One starter has officially been ruled out: right guard Shaq Mason, whose calf injury will keep him off the field. He will be joined in street clothes by backup guard Brian Schwenke, who is also out. New England then has a whopping 13 players listed as questionable, including such notable names as Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman. However, besides the two guards, every Patriots player except reserve linebacker Nicholas Grigsby did practice on at least a limited basis on Friday.
Here are the full reports for the two teams’ week nine matchup.
