It’s the dream scenario for the people running the Big Ten: Michigan and Ohio State playing on the final Saturday of the college football season for a spot in the conference’s championship game and a possible playoff spot. Fans of other schools in the conference it will loathe it, but that’s the scenario facing the conference today.
With a two-game lead over Wisconsin, the Northwestern Wildcats have already locked up the West division. That leaves the Wolverines, 8-0 in the Big Ten, and the 7-1 Buckeyes fighting at the Horseshoe in Columbus for the right to go to Indianapolis. For Michigan, a win today and another win next week all but locks in a spot in the College Football Playoff. Ohio State, meanwhile, likely would need some help to sneak their way into the top four.
Yesterday, the Big XII and Pac-12 races were decided, while the ACC and SEC games were locked in last week. It’s Alabama vs. Georgia in the SEC, and Clemson will play Pittsburgh for the ACC title next Saturday.
If your team is out of the race, fear not, because it’s still rivalry week. Minnesota and Wisconsin are playing for Paul Bunyan’s Axe once again — head over to Bucky’s 5th Quarter for this eloquent post about how it would actually be a good thing for this rivalry to be competitive again. In-state rivalries like Florida-Florida State, Auburn-Alabama, and Georgia-Georgia Tech are happening as well.
Playoff implications aside, this weekend is always fun, so sit back and enjoy your Saturday.
