Friday Cheese Curds: Packers playing second fiddle to the Browns in coaching search

If you’d have told Green Bay Packers fans in August their team would have a duplicate record with the Cleveland Browns in December, they’d probably say they’d be stunned the Browns had such a strong season.

Now that December is actually here and both teams have identical records and for all the wrong season.

What’s worse is both teams have head coaching vacancies and somehow the Packers opening is the less desirable of the two.

Does this sound like some version of hell, Packer Nation? It’s not quite as bad as it might sound.

Cleveland has been in the basement of the league for decades and has been able to stockpile a lot of young talent thanks to consistently picking in the top five of the draft. Green Bay has spent most of their time picking in the mid-to-late twenties the past decade, save the past two seasons.

The Packers do still have Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, but he just turned 35 and has fewer years behind him than he does ahead. The Browns have Baker Mayfield, a gifted but raw young signal caller who could take the throne Rodgers currently holds as the NFL’s most gifted signal callers.

There are more factors than the above at play obviously, but the bottom line is the Packers are a victim of their own success in this situation.

What the Packers do have going for them is obviously Rodgers but also a young aggressive general manager in Brian Gutekunst. It’s not a bad job by any means, it’s just Cleveland holds an advantage thanks to their long stretch of poor play.
