NFL Offseason Calendar 2018: Dates and events for free agency & NFL Draft

Here are all the dates you need to know for the rest of the 2018 offseason.

With the 2018 NFL offseason officially upon us, here is a list of dates and events to keep in mind for the remainder of the offseason. We have the dates split up both by category and by date to help you keep track.

As a reminder before getting into the list, the 2018 league year begins on March 14th. That is the date when free agency will begin and when teams must be under the 2018 salary cap. Of course, the 2018 cap number has yet to be determined and will be announced sometime prior to that date.

Major Events by Category

2018 NFL Draft

  • NFL Scouting Combine: February 27—March 5 (Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Indiana)
  • 2018 NFL Draft: April 26—28 (AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas)
  • NFLPA Rookie Premiere: May 17-20
  • Rookie Transition Programs: Late June

2018 Free Agency

  • Waiver system begins: February 5
  • Legal Tampering Period: March 12—14
  • Free Agency begins: March 14, 4:00 PM ET
  • Deadline to decide on fifth-year options for 2015 first-round draft picks: May 3

Restricted FA/ERFA

  • RFA and ERFA tenders must be submitted by March 14, 4:00 PM ET
  • Deadline for RFA to sign offer sheets with other teams: April 20

Franchise/Transition Tags

  • First day to assign tags: February 20
  • Deadline to assign tags: March 6
  • Deadline for teams to sign Franchise players to multi-year contract: July 16

On-Field Work

  • Teams with new head coaches may begin offseason workout programs: April 2
  • Teams with returning head coaches (including Green Bay Packers) may begin Phase 1 of offseason workout programs (strength & conditioning only): April 16
  • Post-Draft Rookie Minicamps: May 4-6, May 5-7, May 11-13, or May 12-14
  • Teams with returning head coaches may begin Phase 2 of offseason workout programs (on-field individual workouts): April 30
  • Teams with returning head coaches may begin Phase 3 of offseason workout programs (Organized Team Activities): May 21
  • Mandatory Veteran Minicamp: June 4-8 or June 11-15
  • Training Camps Begin: Mid- to late-July (dates TBA)

League Meetings

  • Annual League Meeting: March 25-28 (Orlando, Florida)
  • Spring League Meeting: May 21-23 (Atlanta, Georgia)

Major Events by Date

February

  • February 13, 12 Noon ET: NFL teams may sign players whose 2017 CFL contracts have expired
  • February 20: First day to assign Franchise or Transition tags
  • February 27-March 5: 2018 NFL Scouting Combine (Indianapolis, Indiana)

March

  • March 6, 4:00 PM ET: Deadline to designate Franchise or Transition tags
  • March 12—14: “Legal Tampering Period” — teams may contact and negotiate contract terms with agents of unrestricted free agents
  • March 14, 4:00 PM ET: Start of 2018 League Year; Free Agency begins; deadline for RFA/ERFA tenders to be submitted; Top 51 salary cap rule begins for 2018; trading for 2018 season begins; deadline for team options for 2018 in player contracts
  • March 25—28: NFL Annual League Meeting (Orlando, Florida)

April

  • April 2: Teams with new head coaches may begin offseason workout programs
  • April 16: Teams with returning head coaches (including Green Bay Packers) may begin Phase 1 of offseason workout programs (strength & conditioning only)
  • April 20: Deadline for Restricted Free Agents to sign offer sheets
  • April 26—28: 2018 NFL Draft (AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas)
  • April 30: Teams with returning head coaches may begin Phase 2 of offseason workout programs (on-field individual workouts)

May

  • May 3: Deadline to exercise fifth-year options on 2015 first-round draft picks
  • May 4—7 or May 11—14: Post-Draft rookie minicamps held
  • May 21: Teams with returning head coaches may begin Phase 3 of offseason workout programs (Organized Team Activities)
  • May 21—23: NFL Spring League Meeting (Atlanta, Georgia)

June

  • June 4—8 or June 11—15: Mandatory Veteran Minicamps held
  • Late June: Rookie Transition Programs held at team facilities

July

  • July 16, 4:00 PM ET:

August

  • August 2: Hall of Fame Game, Canton, Ohio (teams TBA)
  • August 2—5: Hall of Fame Enshrinement Weekend, Canton, Ohio
  • August 7: Deadline for players under contract to report to their teams to earn an accrued season for free agency credit

September

  • September 1, 4:00 PM ET: Deadline for teams to reduce active rosters to 53 players
  • September 2, 12:00 PM ET: Claiming period for players placed on waivers at final roster cut-down
  • September 2, 1:00 PM ET: Teams may begin signing unclaimed players to practice squads
  • September 6, 12:00 AM ET: Top 51 salary cap rule expires
