Cheese Curds 2/14: Packers may need some veteran love at cornerback

The Green Bay Packers were awful on defense in 2017.

In other news, water is wet.

Remaking the defense will be priority one for general manager Brian Gutekunst and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine this offseason and there are needs aplenty on that side of the ball.

One the biggest needs going into last offseason was the secondary, and former general manager Ted Thompson tried to address it through the draft and the bargain bin in free agency.

Bringing back Davon House brought mixed results to the table and rookie Kevin King had a typical roller coaster first season before ending up on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

Along with a pass rush, this remains a top area of concern for the Packers. It’s unclear how Gutekunst will address this but throwing more youth at the position probably won’t yield much immediate improvement.

Instead, they could add veteran talent via free agency while also hoping for a strong second season from King and a rebound season from safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.

Clinton-Dix was not good last year. King was not healthy. Both will need a Randall-type rebound for the Packers to have a strong defense.
