Cheese Curds, 2/16: Packers WR rumor mill keeps spinning, McCarron is a UFA

New, comments

While the Packers still appear no closer to making any decisions on some high-priced veterans, there is another quarterback now scheduled to be on the market for teams around the NFL.

With the opening of free agency now less than a month away, the Green Bay Packers have plenty of decisions to make as they look to build out the 2018 roster. One of the biggest, of course, is what to do — if anything — about their two veteran receivers who enter the season with big contracts.

In today’s curds, we find an NFL reporter who believes that one or both of the two wideouts will be looking for another job in the next few weeks, though there remains plenty of debate on which one is more likely to be released.

Meanwhile, one significant free agent battle has been settled through arbitration. Another top quarterback is officially an unrestricted free agent, adding to the supply of signal-callers that will be available next month. A.J. McCarron’s legal battle boiled down to some specific language in the collective bargaining agreement regarding the difference between injury lists and how free agency credit is calculated. Regardless, he will have more suitors in a few weeks than he would have had the decision gone the other way.

NFL insider would be ‘surprised’ if Packers kept both Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb | Packers Wire
Ian Rapoport is the quoted reporter, and he predicts that if one of the two gets cut, it's going to be Cobb. Personally, I still think the likelier situation is that Nelson takes a pay cut or gets released and offered a deal for less money.

Corey Linsley is also in that group, the only Packers player to not miss a play. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was close, but took eight snaps off in a blowout victory over the Bears. Interestingly, only three defensive players didn't miss a snap in 2017, and two of them were members of the Browns: linebackers Christian Kirksey and Joe Schobert.

Parilli shared QB duties with Rote, Starr in four Packers seasons | Packers.com
Do you remember the name Babe Parilli from Packers lore? The quarterback rotated with Tobin Rote in his first stint with the Packers (1952 and 53) and again with Bart Starr later on that decade.

Jeremiah Attaochu could be an intriguing player for the Packers in free agency, but the key for him is staying healthy. He has played just 12 games in the past two years combined, but pass-rush ability is there if he can stay on the field.

AJ McCarron is ruled an unrestricted free agent. What that means for Bengals QB - SBNation.com
This was one of the more interesting storylines leading up to free agency. Basically, McCarron argued that by putting him on the Non-Football Injury list when he was healthy enough to play, the Bengals unfairly cost him a year of free agency credit. The arbitrator ruled in his favor, and now he's set to cash in with a starter-level contract.

Mayock's first top-five rankings are here, and as usual he has a few ties for the fifth spots so he can list six or seven players at certain positions.
