Cheese Curds, 3/5: Packers meetings & the best moments from NFL Combine weekend

We discuss some of the prospects the team is showing interest in and run down some fun storylines from Indy.

NFL: Combine Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

With three days of players interviews from the 2018 NFL Combine taking place since the last edition of Cheese Curds, there’s a lot to sort through on this Monday morning. The Combine is of course a place where teams can meet with draft prospects to get a feel for their personalities, and the interview process is arguably the most important piece for teams during that week.

We learned about many players who had formal and informal meetings with the Green Bay Packers in Indianapolis, including but by no means limited to the following:

  • Derwin James, safety, Florida State
  • D.J. Moore, wide receiver, Maryland
  • Troy Fumagalli, tight end, Wisconsin
  • Ian Thomas, tight end, Indiana

Those are of course just a few of the names who had discussions with Green Bay. Practically every team meets informally with just about every player in attendance at the Combine at some point, so it’s important not to read too much into which players had meetings, particularly informal ones.

Without further ado, let’s get into some of the big news out of Indy over the weekend.

Pass-rush prospects provide NFC North intrigue | Packers.com
Marcus Davenport and Harold Landry will be under consideration by Brian Gutekunst and company with the Packers' first-round draft pick, but both of their defensive line coaches now work for the Detroit Lions.

Packers among teams meeting with Denzel Ward at Combine - NFL.com
Ward's speed should be tantalizing, and we'll see how he runs today. However, it's his size that will scare some teams off. He measured in just barely at the Packers' old cutoff for cornerbacks at 5' 10-7/8", but he's just 183 pounds and has shorter arms than you'd like for a press corner. The Packers also met with safety Derwin James, among others.

Combine Notes: Day 5 | Draft Analyst
Tony Pauline's reporting says that the Packers really like Boise State's Leighton Vander Esch, an off-ball linebacker.

It's time for "quotes from anonymous scouts/coaches" season!

Chubb's antics on the field are more amusing than anything, and teammates seem to love them.

Potential Packers’ target at TE already receiving heavy interest | Packers Wire
Former Eagles tight end Trey Burton will be looked at by a lot of teams, as half the league has reportedly made calls to his agent.

Packers ‘believe in’ Brett Hundley, but exploring QB prospects | Packersnews.com
They’d be crazy not to; after all, Hundley is a free agent after 2018. Among the signal-callers who talked to the Packers informally this week in Indy were Kyle Lauletta from Richmond and Kurt Benkert of Virginia.
