Cheese Curds, 8/17: Kumerow earns national attention, Packers’ tight ends impress

Maybe the Packers’ investment in the tight end position will finally pay off this year.

NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers at Green Bay Packers Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

It was an explosive night for the Green Bay Packers on Thursday, who got scoring contributions from both expected and unexpected sources in their 51-34 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. A pair of cornerbacks recorded touchdowns on interception returns, including one rookie who paid off on a promise, while the team’s newest red zone weapon cashed in on his first series with the team.

That player is Jimmy Graham, whose only catch of the game went for an eight-yard score. Graham also saw some great production from his fellow tight ends, both veterans and young players.

However, one of the most impressive performances of the game came from Jake Kumerow. The Wisconsin-Whitewater product hauled in three passes for 114 yards and a touchdown, as he continues to prove that he is worthy of a roster spot. Not only has he impressed Packers fans, but he’s now drawing some attention from analysts around the country.

It was another big game for Kumerow last night, punctuated by his 82-yard catch-and-run that finished in the end zone with a shoulder stinger. Meanwhile, Josh Jackson promised his mother a touchdown for her birthday, and he delivered in the third quarter.

Kumerow is drawing attention from national football reporters as well, as he came up on this morning’s Good Morning Football on NFL Network:

Rodgers said that Graham "ran a nice route" and "is a big target." That huge frame should keep coming in handy in the red zone, but Rodgers expects him to be a weapon between the 20s as well.
