Packers at Raiders, Preseason 2018: First half game updates & discussion

Have you heard that Jordy Nelson is playing against his old team tonight?

NFL: Detroit Lions at Oakland Raiders Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports

If you thought seeing Jordy Nelson in black and silver was weird before, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

The former Green Bay Packers wide receiver was released this offseason and signed with the Oakland Raiders, taking him away from his longtime quarterback and good friend Aaron Rodgers. Nelson entered the NFL in Rodgers’ first year as the Packers’ starter, and the two had an impressive ten-year stretch together in Green Bay.

Fittingly, Nelson’s new and old teams drew a preseason matchup against one another in the preseason, meaning that their reunion will take place tonight. Of course, with a storyline like that, it’s no surprise that NFL Network is televising the game nationally (or at least they are televising most of it, as they will show the broadcast starting a half-hour after kickoff.

Now, Nelson has a younger California-native quarterback throwing him the football, as Derek Carr enters his fifth year in the NFL with inconsistent results. Look for Carr and Nelson to play some tonight, but Rodgers and the Packers’ starters are not expected to see any game action. Instead, we’ll watch closely to see if DeShone Kizer gets any playing time ahead of Brett Hundley tonight.

Check out our game primer to get ready, tune in, and keep it locked here at APC as we follow along with tonight’s exhibition contest.
