The Green Bay Packers have released their latest injury report, but nothing new has developed since Wednesday. Once again, the team listed only three players, with rookie linebacker Oren Burks still limited with a shoulder injury.
Burks, whom the Packers selected in the third round, projects as a mainstay of the pass defense this season. However, he hurt his shoulder during the pregame warm-ups during Green Bay’s third preseason game and has remained limited in practice since. With just three days separating the team from the season opener, it looks increasingly doubtful that Burks will make his regular-season debut Sunday night against the Chicago Bears. If he can’t, recently acquired linebackers Antonio Morrison or Korey Toomer would most likely take his place in the base defense.
Elsewhere, fellow rookie linebacker James Crawford remains limited with a hamstring injury. Crawford became a surprise survivor of final cuts as a contributor on special teams. He might have seen some action on defense as well given Burks’ expected absence.
And yet again, second-year safety Josh Jones did not participate in practice due to his ankle. Jones fell behind Kentrell Brice for the starting safety job opposite Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and never quite recovered.
