Packers-Chiefs Injury Report: Mahomes out along with several key KC defenders

KC has six starters out for Sunday, while every Packer on the roster (Davante Adams included) still theoretically could suit up.

For once, the Green Bay Packers seem to have the better of the injury luck as they head towards a Sunday Night Football matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs have a huge number of key players out for Sunday’s game, six to be exact, and all six are members of the team’s starting lineup.

The list of course starts with quarterback Patrick Mahomes. After suffering a dislocated kneecap in last week’s Thursday game, Mahomes surprisingly returned to practice this week despite initial reports that he would be out at least three weeks. However, after taking some reps and being listed as a limited participant each day this week, Mahomes is out and will not play, giving way to Matt Moore as the starting quarterback.

Joining Mahomes on the shelf are two of the Chiefs’ starting offensive linemen: left tackle Eric Fisher and left guard Andrew Wylie. With the Packers’ fearsome pass rush tandem of Preston and Za’Darius Smith combining for 13 sacks already this season, Moore should be in for a long day behind backups Martinas Rankin and Nick Allegretti.

Shifting to the Chiefs’ defense, the team is down two defensive linemen as well, as defensive end Frank Clark and tackle Chris Jones are both out as well. Jones is coming off a 15.5-sack season in 2018, while Clark was a massive offseason addition via trade from Seattle. With the Packers appearing to have a full complement of offensive linemen on Sunday — more on that in a moment — this should provide them with a better chance to make big things happen on the ground and to keep Aaron Rodgers clean.

The final player out for Kansas City is cornerback Kendall Fuller, a primary starter as a slot corner in the Chiefs’ 4-2-5 nickel alignment. Fuller’s absence will hurt, though the Packers would likely have been more dangerous with Davante Adams available.

Speaking of Adams, the Packers have not ruled him out yet for Sunday, but his status remains unlikely. He was listed as doubtful on this week’s injury report after working in the rehab group throughout practice all week. Tight end Robert Tonyan’s hip injury appears to have worsened this week as well, as he went from a full participant on Wednesday to limited Thursday and a DNP on Friday. He is doubtful as well for Sunday.

The Packers also have two players listed as questionable for this game. Rookie safety Darnell Savage was limited in practice the past two days after a full practice Wednesday, and his status remains unsure for Sunday. Meanwhile, center Corey Linsley sat out on Thursday with a back issue that kept him limited on Friday; keep a close eye on his status leading up to game time to see if he will suit up.
