This year, it appears that CBS made a mistake.
Each year, the network gets to pick one CBS game to move out of the 3:30 PM Eastern Time slot and shift into prime time. And every year from 2011 to 2018, that game was LSU vs. Alabama. In that eight-year span, there were three games with both teams ranked in the top five, and two more when both were in the top ten.
But this year, CBS chose to flex out Georgia-Notre Dame instead, as the week four game featured a #3 vs. #7 matchup, won by Georgia 23-17. But this week, the Bama-LSU game is a #2 vs. #3 game, with the two teams occupying the middle two slots in the playoff rankings’ top four.
Now, the game sticks to the late afternoon time slot, and although it will certainly draw big ratings, it should lag behind what it could have done as a night game. The decision also leaves this week’s college football schedule without a great prime time matchup, as all of the other notable games come in the afternoon as well.
The other two big games come in the Big Ten, where the West Division pecking order will be decided somewhat. Penn State — #4 in the first playoff rankings — travels to play unbeaten Minnesota, while Wisconsin hosts Iowa in a top-20 matchup.
Here’s your schedule for this Saturday, and enjoy the games!
