Packers list Jamaal Williams as doubtful for Sunday Night game against Titans

The Packers’ #2 runner is unlikely to plan this weekend, setting up a bigger role for rookie AJ Dillon.

When the Green Bay Packers take the field on Sunday night against the Tennessee Titans, they will likely do so without running back Jamaal Williams. Last Saturday, Williams suffered an injury to his quadriceps early in the game against the Carolina Panthers, playing just a handful of snaps on offense before leaving the game. Now it appears that he will miss the Packers’ week 16 game.

The Packers listed Williams as doubtful on Friday’s injury report and noted that he did not practice at all this week. As a result, expect him to be inactive with the Packers giving Aaron Jones a heavy workload once again. Jones reached the 20-carry mark in a game for the first time this season against the Panthers and should be expected to carry the bulk of the load in the backfield once again on Sunday night. Also look for AJ Dillon to get worked in more significantly this weekend and for one of the practice squad running backs — either Dexter Williams or Mike Weber — to get a weekend call-up.

While not posting flashy numbers in any of his four NFL seasons, Williams has been a steady role player and contributor throughout his tenure in Green Bay. He has posted rushing totals between 450 and 560 yards in all four seasons and has maintained steady receiving value with receiving yardage totals in the 200s each season. Williams missed one game earlier this season: the Packers’ week 9 victory in San Francisco, for which he was inactive after being placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list as a close contact of Dillon’s.

The Packers listed three other players with injury statuses on Friday’s report. Tight end Jace Sternberger will miss a third straight game due to a concussion he suffered three weeks ago against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Packers also will be without safety Will Redmond, who is also dealing with a concussion. Look for Dominique Dafney to continue to get some playing time in Sternberger’s place, while rookies Vernon Scott and Henry Black may get some additional run at safety with Redmond out.

The final player on the Packers’ injury report is rookie guard Simon Stepaniak, who continues to practice but is still yet to fully return to game shape. He was a limited participant on Wednesday and practiced fully on Thursday and Friday, but remains doubtful for Sunday’s game.

Meanwhile, the Tennessee Titans have just one player on their final injury report for this week. That is reserve linebacker Derick Roberson, who came down with a hamstring injury in practice on Thursday and is out for Sunday’s game.

Here’s the Packers’ full injury report.
