Following Saturday’s final cuts to 53-man rosters across the NFL, the Green Bay Packers and the rest of the NFL will begin assembling practice squads on Sunday. This squad will take on an added level of importance in 2020, as COVID-19-related changes will allow for teams to keep 16 players on the unit instead of the typical ten.
Ordinarily, the practice squad is intended for young players with little or no professional experience. Those players benefit from added time with the team, practicing normally and learning to hone their skills. The Packers in particular have used this squad heavily to develop players in the past, and six members of the team’s initial 53-man roster have spent time on the practice squad in previous years.
This year, however, six of the 16 spots on the squad will be open to players of any experience level, including vested veterans with more than four years of NFL experience. This means that effectively any player released on Saturday is eligible.
Waivers for players released on Saturday cleared at 11:00 AM Central on Sunday. The Packers did not claim any players, though one of the Packers' cuts was claimed: wideout Malik Turner, who landed with the Cowboys. Now, teams may begin signing players to the practice squad as of 12 noon. Here we will follow along with media reports of all of the Packers’ signings throughout the day.
