The first 13 minutes or so of Sunday’s NFC Championship Game were brutal for the Green Bay Packers. The team’s defense allowed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to convert each of their first five third-down opportunities, with four of them requiring seven yards or more to gain.
The Bucs’ opening drive ended on a touchdown pass from Tom Brady to Mike Evans, and the Packers punted after a single first down on their own first offensive series. After getting a stop, the Packers got the football back at their own ten, and faced a third-and-15 from their own five-yard line.
But a tremendous roll-out pass from Aaron Rodgers to Allen Lazard kept the drive going, and following a few nice plays, Rodgers struck lightning to the Packers’ big-play threat, Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
On third and short, Rodgers dialed up a deep shot to MVS up the right sideline, and he hauled in a contested catch around cornerback Carlton Davis, scampering into the end zone for a 50-yard touchdown.
