Super Bowl Sunday is almost here! Brady vs. Mahomes. Arians vs. Reid. Wings vs. Tacos?? That’s right, the biggest matchup this weekend may not be on the field, but in the kitchen. Over 28 million pounds of food (or approximately one Vita Vea) will be consumed this Sunday as we all watch the big game. So we thought it would be fun to break down some of the most popular Gameday foods in America and pit them against each other. Seeding has been determined in part by this poll from YouGov detailing which foods are the most popular for Super Bowl Sunday.

1. Wings vs. 8. Tacos

Wings are the undisputed top dog here. Not only have they been a popular choice for delivery during the pandemic, they’ve been the king of Super Bowl food for years. Over 1 billion wings will be consumed this weekend. To put that in perspective, 150 million people tune in to watch at least some of the Super Bowl. Assuming equal wing distribution, that’s… a lot of wings per person! While Tacos are a beloved staple of any gameday, I’m not quite sure they have the juice in this David vs. Goliath matchup.

2. Pizza vs. 7. Cookies

Maybe the most interesting matchup in the bracket for me. There are so many variations on each of these contenders. Endless amounts of toppings for both! For the purpose of this tournament though, it’s best to keep things simple. Over 10 million pizzas will be ordered for the game. I don’t feel like doing the math on slices but rest assured, there will be enough cheese consumed to scare every lactose intolerant person in the country (our hearts are with you). I think this is where we could see our first upset. Cookies have a heavy burden to bear as the only representation for sweets in the bracket. If we’re talking sheer quantity, cookies would take the cake here. Eating 24 cookies? No problem. 24 slices of Pizza? Maybe a hospital trip.

3. Chips & Dip vs. 6. Burgers

Another matchup with many possible combinations! We could be talking about buffalo chicken dip, ranch dip, or even Crab Rangoon dip! As I’m writing this, I’m starting to think I have chips & dip too low. The Super Bowl is all about stuffing your face while never taking your eyes off the action. While you may encounter some serious spillage, chips & dip mostly fulfill this vital role. Burgers, on the other hand, can get pretty messy! But very few things in this life can top the taste of a burger fresh off the grill. Piled high with cheese, veggies, and whatever condiments your heart desires, this is as synonymous with America as the big game is. Let’s be honest, the messy nature only enhances the experience. You have plenty of time to clean up afterwards.

4. Nachos vs. 5. Meatballs

Nachos! The ultimate party snack. Whether you’re literally throwing pounds upon pounds of chips onto a table and letting everyone dig in (maybe not recommended right now…) or just heating up shredded cheese on stale tortilla chips because you’re too lazy to do anything else, everyone has a soft spot for nachos. I was quite honestly surprised to see meatballs on the list of most popular game day foods. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good meatball, but I have to say it’s not in my usual game day rotation! That being said, lots of options here as well. Thousands of recipes for all sorts of weird meatball concoctions exist on the web and many of them will be put to use this Sunday. I expect Nachos will take this one in a landslide but I am always ready for an upset.
